A Modern Irish Retreat
Nestled amidst the serene lowlands and loughs of North County Roscommon, the remnants of an old rural cottage offered a unique opportunity to create a contemporary home for a young family. The design concept sought to reimagine the traditional Irish rural bungalow by drawing inspiration from ancient Roman architecture, the domus.
The proposed home features a central courtyard, a modern interpretation of the Roman peristyle. This design choice offers multiple connections to the outdoors, allowing the inhabitants to engage with nature from various living spaces. The courtyard also provides a sheltered outdoor room, perfect for enjoying the Irish countryside, regardless of the weather.
In Detail:
Respecting the Landscape
The narrow floor plan, wrapped around the courtyard, creates a simple, yet striking form that harmonizes with the open horizon. A grid of landscaped squares seamlessly integrates the garden into the surrounding landscape, blurring the lines between the built environment and the natural world.
Reuse of the Old
The proposal reuses of the stone from the old cottage, to wrap the entrance to the new home, as well as extending walls from the house into the landscape to anchor the new form in the landscape.
