Blackwater, Co. Kerry

Private Residence, Renovation & Extension

Under Construction

Situated within a designated Special Area of Conservation at the foot of MacGillycuddy's Reeks, this project reimagines a derelict farmhouse into a contemporary dwelling, drawing inspiration from the region’s rich agricultural heritage whilst seamlessly blending into its rural setting.

Inspired by the organic growth of traditional farmyards, the new plan unfolds as a cluster of simple, rectangular forms arranged around the footprint of the original house. These narrow-plan "barns" create sheltered courtyards, blurring the lines between indoors and out. The modest scale and low-slung rooflines, echoing the existing house and neighbouring outbuildings, ensure a harmonious integration with the landscape.

In Detail

A Contemporary Interpretation of Rural Architecture

Externally, a minimalist aesthetic defines the project. Charred timber cladding, a dark steel roof, and a rusticated steel plinth create a striking contrast against the natural backdrop. The simple forms and clean lines of the building celebrate its contemporary character while respecting the traditional vernacular.

Internally, the narrow plan, exposed soffits, and full-height south-facing windows create bright, airy living spaces. The design prioritises passive solar gain and natural ventilation, ensuring optimal comfort and energy efficiency.

Focus on a Sustainable Future

As architects, we strive to create buildings that not only enhance the lives of their occupants but also minimize their environmental impact. This project embodies sustainable principles, utilising low-carbon materials and targeting Passive House performance standards. By repurposing materials from the original house and optimising energy efficiency, we aim to create a lasting legacy that respects both the past and the future.
